The Centre for Quality Assurance of Technological Applications in the Medical Field
(CAATS) was created in May 1989, instigated by Medical Physicists and Radiologists.
This structure originated from the need felt by its founding members to establish a
facility for research and consulting work to ensure the most rational use of radiological
techniques.
The specific area of activity of CAATS concerns the development of quality assurance
programme and studies in medical diagnostic radiology. Works are undertaken in this field
with a view to both optimize imaging technique performances and reduce the associated
radiological risk. CAATS has established links with national institutions :
INSERM, the government bio-medical research organisation in France
the Atomic Energy Commission
the National Metrology Laboratory of Ionising Radiation
and international ones :
the Commission of European Communities
the International Agency of Atomic Energy
Hospitals and Universities in Madrid, Udine (Italy)
the National Radiological Protection Board (United Kingdom)
Gesellschaft für Strahlen und Umweltforschung (Germany).
Besides the research work carried out for these various organisations, CAATS provides Quality Control services to interested private companies, administrative bodies and professional medical organisations.
Studies related to the risks, costs and quality criteria of medical imaging techniques.
Auditing and assessment of technical options related to radiological equipment.
Review studies related to national or international technical protocols, guidelines and
recommendations.
Assessment of technical performances of imaging equipment.
Optimisation of risks, costs and quality of care.
Permanent remote monitoring of quality control programmes in the field of mammography (AQM
server) and general diagnostic radiology.
Organisation of Radiation Protection training courses and seminars on a national and
international level.
